Een deftig oldschool death metal pakketje in DVG Club. En dat op een maandagavond. Dit is er toch wel eentje waar ik serieus naar uitkeek. En teleurgesteld was ik niet echt moet ik zeggen. Er staan al redelijk wat jaren op de teller van deze 3 bands maar het was er zeker niet aan te merken. En volk was er ook genoeg voor een weekdag. Jungle Rot © Andy Vuylsteke / AXV Visuals Master Deze Amerikaanse death metal band was samen met Death en Possessed een pionier in het genre. Ze gingen van start in 1983 en meer dan 40 jaar later zijn ze er nog altijd. Met tracks als 'Pay to die' en 'Terrorizer' was de toon van de avond vlug gezet. Spijtig genoeg heb ik niet genoeg kennis over Master hun repertoire, maar hun set was indrukwekkend genoeg om mij er in te gaan verdiepen. Jungle Rot 'Old schoooooool!' ... dat was wel het woordje van de avond. En terecht ook natuurlijk. Niks tegen de nieuwe generatie death metal bands, maar vanavond werd nog maar eens bewezen dat de echte old school bands er nog altijd staan. Nummers als 'Doomsday', 'A burning cinder' en 'Exit wounds' galmden door de zaal. Hier zag je wel dat het publiek ferm in vorm was. Zo goed als na ieder nummer riep er wel iemand 'old schooooool!'. De mix van enthousiasme en een tank van een set zorgde voor meer dan een opwarmer voor Benediction. Benediction Hah! Wat keek ik uit naar Dave Ingram en zijn buddies van Benediction! Ik zag ze al verschillende keren op festivals, maar nog nooit in een zaal. Net zoals hun voorgangers stonden deze Britten redelijk scherp. Ook aan humor geen gebrek. Zeker wanneer grunter van dienst wel een roadie op het podium had gewild om hun gitarist zijn broek op te trekken. Die gast zat namelijk met een redelijke bouwvakkersgleuf en Dave was er niet goed van. Anyway, ze speelden een verschrikkelijk coole set met oud en nieuw materiaal. De nummers 'Crawling over corpses' en 'In the dread of the night' van de laatste nieuwe release werden goed onthaald. Ook oude krakers zoals ' Foetus noose' en 'They must die screaming' waren dankbaar ontvangen. Persoonlijk had ik puur uit nostalgie nog wel 'Down on whores' willen horen. Het nummer over Jack The Ripper met mega coole video. Ah, de dagen van Headbangers Ball zijn zo ver voorbij. Maar toch, Dave Ingram bewees dat hij godverdomme nog altijd een moddervette strot heeft. Aan al wie gruwelt bij nog maar het denken aan Disney en/of female fronted symphonic metal, stop nu met lezen en druk op uw back button. Voor de rest even goede vrienden uiteraard. Unreachable is een song die erom schreeuwt om als theme song in een Disneyfilm gebruikt te worden. Noa Gruman is een fantastische zangeres en een geweldige frontvrouw die erin slaagt om te flirten met het Disneyprinsessenimago zonder dat het naar de verkeerde kant doorslaat. Je bent ervoor of niet voor, dat maakt niet uit. Zelf ben ik ook geen onvoorwaardelijke fan, maar deze song doet toch iets bij mij. Misschien komt het wel door het koor (the TLV Orchestra) dat bestaat uit Joden, Moslims en Druzen (en zodoende bewijst dat muziek grens- en religie-overschrijdend is) en die luit-solo. Scardust continued working with filmmaker Lahav Levi, whose creative vision has played a key role in bringing their music to life on screen. Alongside Scardust’s rise, Noa Gruman’s metal choir, Hellscore, has been gaining significant recognition. Known for their unique a cappella renditions of metal classics, they have collaborated with renowned artists and bands such as Epica, Therion, Amorphis, and Alestorm. Hellscore is also an integral part of Scardust’s sound, performing on all their albums and live shows. Noa Gruman is also much in demand as a vocalist and the already-impressive list of her recent guest vocal appearances includes albums by Amorphis, Ayreon, Therion, Gloryhammer, Nino Helfrich and Orphaned Land.

Met de combinatie van een 7-string gitaar en een 5-string bass kan je je geluid loodzwaar laten klinken. Iets wat de dames van Frantic Amber dan ook ten volle benutten. Dit is echt zware, diepe death metal met toch ook voldoende oog voor melodie. Persoonlijk zou ik het nog beter hebben gevonden als er nog wat meer dramatiek in verwerkt zou zitten. Daarmee bedoel ik nog iets meer symfonische strijkers en waarom ook niet wat koorzang. Maar zoals het nu klinkt, is het ook al bijzonder mooi en tenslotte, wie ben ik? De release van deze video voor Black Widow gaat gepaard met de release van hun nieuwe album Death Becomes Her (Roar Records). Het is een conceptalbum geworden over seriemoordenaars en dat zijn daarom, zoals de single laat horen, niet noodzakelijk altijd mannen. Er zijn me dunkt vrolijkere onderwerpen om over te zingen, maar bij zo'n laag gitaargeluid en die onheilspellende grunts van Elizabeth Andrews past het uiteraard wel. "Black Widow" is a category of female killers that kill for financial or material gain. Their victims are most commonly their husbands or lovers and likely with a life insurance or two involved. Oftentimes she goes free to kill again since she mainly uses poison which can have similar symptoms to natural causes of death, paired with the societal belief that women are soft and don't kill… The Black Widow's greatest weakness and most probable downfall is her greed. With a grand expenditure and lifestyle she must repeatedly turn to killing and eventually suspicion and autopsies arrive. The song “Black Widow” is a quite catchy song blending multiple metal genres such as thrash and symphonic metal. The lyrics are a reflection of this kind of female serial killers drawing inspiration from the stories of various women around the world fitting this category. It was the third song we wrote to completion for the album and it was released as a single but a brand new music video for the song now drops together with the release of our album “Death Becomes Her”.

Méér dan twintig jaar bestaan ze al, maar ik ben er zeker van dat jullie nog noooooooooiiiiiiitttt van deze band uit Manchester hebben gehoord! En dat is een beetje spijtig, maar ook wel een beetje hun eigen schuld. Het drietal uit Manchester rond gitarist/zanger Bert Genovese maakt uiterst energieke 'schorriemorrie', oftewel een chaotische mashup van punk, experimentele rock, shoegaze en psychobilly. Bert wie? Jawel, onze buddy van Horsemeat ! Hun eerste wapenfeit kwam er in 2004 met een zelfgetitelde EP waarvan ik betwijfel of dit wel dezelfde band is! Social Suicide (2007) en Kill the Atopilot (2009) waren doordrenkt van rock en punk. In 2010 verscheen hun EP Lost Make Up waarmee ze geleidelijk aan hun huidige sound vonden. Zes jaar later doken dan de demo's voor Nurse Corkscrew op. Bassist/producer Simon 'Ding' Archer omschreef de relatie van de muzikanten met de band als die van een tiener en liefjes. Het titelnummer van nieuwe album komt binnen als een molotovcocktail: een ontvlambare mix van diverse ingrediënten die inslaat als een kruidig bommetje! Het is af en toe goed zoeken naar die pareltjes in de Goth, Doom en Progmetal scene. Op eens duikt er één op, genaamd After Taste. Een band die Dynamo Heavy jullie graag wil voorstellen. Ik denk dat hij het zelf ook zou toegeven ... Danko Jones heeft het warm water niet uitgevonden en vernieuwend is het zeker niet. Maar Jones is godverdomme toch een kei in zijn vak en wat hij doet, doet hij niet gewoon goed maar meesterlijk goed. "If you want it, you got it, we're gonna give you what you need." Deze openingszinnen van wat ook de opener van het nieuwe album, dat later dit jaar zal verschijnen, vat de essentie van Danko Jones perfect samen. Gewoon prettig gestoorde, lekker vuil klinkende 3-minuten rock 'n' roll. Soms klinkt het wat bizar in mijn oren: traditionele heavy metal - weliswaar qua sound helemaal in het heden - met die unclean vocals erover. Ik zou eerder een meer 'klassieke' metal stem verwachten in de lijn van Ronnie James Dio of Eric Adams . Natuurlijk zorgt White-Gluz ervoor dat Arch Enemy op één of andere wijze toch een eigen smoelwerk heeft. A Million Suns kan ik zo in het repertoire van Manowar verplaatsen. Ik heb nu de helft van de songs op het nieuwe album aan bod laten komen en kan jullie meegeven dat ook de andere vijf eenzelfde geluid laten horen. Misschien één uitzondering: op de ballad Vivre Libre laat de frontvrouw horen dat ze haar machtige uncleane zang niet nodig heeft om te overtuigen. De Québécoise zingt hier in het Frans. In de video krijgen we trouwens (deels) haar AI-versie te zien. Blood Dynasty is op 28 maart 2025 verschenen via Century Media Records. Bodem @ Flagey The trio Bodem opened the night at Flagey Studios for an ode to belgian jazz. The trio showcased their talents to go beyond the conventional sounds of each instrument they played, to create a unique performance that could at times be mistaken by a rock melodic concert, all perfectly synchronised with a digital background that met perfectly their music, creating the perfect atmosphere for this first show of the evening. For me, it was amazing to be back at the first venue that gave me the opportunity to take pictures for this website, 2 years ago already, and it’s always a pleasure to be back at Flagey. The pictures of the second concert of the night, Maconso Trio, will be available at the site of Les Lundis d’hortonse, the organisation that organised this second concert, and who granted me the access too for tonight. Byrchwood @ Muziekzolder (Maasdijk, NL) Johan Sonneveld Op donderdag 4 april, in een sfeervolle, besloten setting gevuld met louter bluesfanaten, liet de Leeuwarder bluesrockformatie Byrchwood op de Muziekzolder te Maasdijk horen waarom de erfenis van de jaren ’60 en ’70 nog springlevend is. De avond was een feest van snerpende gitaren, grommende bassen en oprechte muzikale passie, waarbij de band de zaal meesleurde in een tijd waarin blues en rock samensmolten tot iets rauws en echts. Vanaf de eerste klanken werd duidelijk dat Byrchwood het publiek niet van plan was te sparen. Met een gitaarriff die zo uit de platenkast van Cream of Rory Gallagher had kunnen komen, trapte de band af in een stevig tempo. Zanger/gitarist Tim Birkenholtz wist zijn Gibson met precisie en gevoel te bespelen; zijn snijdende licks en vuige akkoorden vulden de zolder. Hoe meer borden wij als voorgerecht voorgeschoven krijgen, hoe harder wij uitkijken naar de hoofdschotel. Het volledige debuutalbum van Changeling dat de titel Changeling meekrijgt, verschijnt op 25 april via Season of Mist. Dit titelnummer is echt een bommetje van 7 minuten heerlijke progressive death metal met nog een heleboel andere invloeden erin verwerkt en een heerlijke razernij naar het einde toe. Smullen maar! Following the release of the debut album’s first two singles Abyss & Falling in Circles, today Season of Mist is releasing the almost 7” title track. The newly released piece serves as the turning point in the album’s psychedelic concept narrative, chronicling the protagonist’s journey to the outer realms of the psychedelic experience. Inspired by Lovecraftian horror, existential philosophy, and the bizarre hallucinations of a consciousness torn apart, the song’s progressive structure mirrors the chaotic beauty of its lyrical themes, pulling the listener into an unsettling yet mesmerizing new dimension, though the use of microtonal synthesizers, ritualistic vocals, oriental percussion and a full choir. “Void and vengeance shall beget A child from below A changeling of clandestine soul Comes usurping the holiest of hearts And no one shall know” Morean sings, as the intricate but catchy fusion of progressive death metal, avant-garde jazz, and world music influences creates a surreal and immersive listening experience. The dissonant harmonies distort reality, producing an eerie and unsettling atmosphere. Geldschläger explains: “This song came from a few musical themes that I had written on the oud. From those few humble notes, it turned into quite the monster - a monster where I think everybody in the core-band shines equally. At that point in the album's story, we're beginning to take the frame-work of tech/prog death metal into uncharted territory, so it seemed appropriate to give this song a unique, winding structure where a shorter pumping mid-tempo banger is book-ended by intensely psychedelic blast-beat driven parts that are building towards a quasi-black metal frenzy at the end. It also has some of my favorite Morean-lyrics of all time. Not only does he paint a vivid picture of a strange, unfamiliar dimension through his signature wordplay - he also quite literally takes us there in the song's mid-section breakdown, were we envisioned a strange jungle-ritual evoking some dark cosmic entity, somewhere between Lovecraft and Peter Jackson's "King Kong". And, as usual, the man took it to another level by adding a multitude of eery, slithering voices, which are making the song feel almost like it's breathing. Oh, and this piece also has some of my favorite RIFFS (in capital letters) that I've ever written, as well as some quite extreme guitar shenanigans that I called "layers of cosmic horror" during production. Get out your best headphones for this one!”
