Ik schakel even terug naar wat alledaagse metaltonen van iemand die zijn sporen reeds heeft verdiend en eigenlijk al véél te groot is om hier nog aan bod te komen. Zijn 'riffs & hooks heavy' A Dying Machine uit 2018 kon ik best smaken ondanks al het spierballengerol, maar om dan uit te kijken naar een volgende krachttoer, neen, daarvoor kan dergelijke metal me al lang niet meer genoeg boeien. Maar kijk, als dit nummer een voorbode mag zijn voor wat volgt, dan zou Markske nog eens (lichtjes) kunnen verrassen. Sure, de epische elementen zitten erin en ook veel melodie, maar ergens detecteer ik toch net iets meer finesse in de gitaarpartijen en ook in de structuur van het nummer. If Not For You lijkt wel - héél voorzichtig dan - elementen uit prog en post te willen laten insluipen in het kenmerkende Tremonti geluid, wat zo'n beetje een zéér goed verpakt dertien-in-een-dozijn metalgeluid is. De aanloop naar het refrein bv. en ook wel de korte, vrij verrassende bridge.
Eigenlijk laat ik dergelijke albums tegenwoordig liefst links liggen, maar Tremonti heeft met deze song mijn interesse toch gewekt. Al zal hij er geen seconde slaap voor laten zou dit niet het geval zijn.
