Eenzaamheid, isolatie, trauma, existentiële vragen, … de thema’s die Pallbearer aanhaalt op haar nieuwste plaat zijn niet bepaald het equivalent van een zonnige zomerdag. De Amerikanen schieten al meer dan 15 jaar raak met intense, emotionele doom die je ongenadig bij je nekvel grijpt. Hun nieuwste album, Mind Burns Alive, belooft wederom hetzelfde te doen.
De tweede single van dit album, Endless Place, is een tien minuten durend epos dat de thematische essentie van het album omvat, aldus vocalist Brett Campbell: “These are vignettes which tell the stories of people who deal with myriad sicknesses of the spirit. These are illnesses communicated by the world we live in, and the subjects are the symptoms of its disease.”
De band kiest ervoor om de metal in hun sound in te wisselen voor zachtere post-rock. Dat wilt echter niet zeggen dat de muziek minder rauw of hard binnenkomt. De subtiele complexiteit die in dit nummer zit vervat, laat je bij elke luisterbeurt weer nieuwe details ontdekken. Dus zet je neer, neem de tijd om een paar keer op repeat te duwen en laat je overdonderen. En boek ineens tickets voor Hell's Balls om Pallbearer live aan het werk te zien.
