Sounds | Maple Glider, Baby Tiger

Het is een open deur intrappen, maar nog eens: wat kan minder toch meer zijn. Tori Zeitsch zingt héél etherisch over een zachtjes plukkende nylon string gitaar over een donkere periode in haar leven. Ik wordt er stil van.

"It’s actually pretty weird reflecting upon this time. I’d just moved home to Naarm (Melbourne) after being away for two years. I’d just come out of a weird relationship and was trying to land back in my skin again. The air was smokey and bushfires seemed to be swallowing everything. I felt a bit distant from everything. I just wanted someone to be there and make things feel better, even temporarily. I’d never really felt this way before.

Baby Tiger is our resident door scratcher. Her real name is Coriander. "

Maple Glider is the project of Tori Zietsch (pron. like ‘peach’ with a z), and on To Enjoy is the Only Thing she compiles a striking set of vignettes from her life; growing up in a restrictive religious household, falling in and out of love, cross-country and international travel, longing, alienation, and more. Moments both unremarkable and life-altering, but always deeply felt, brought to vivid life by the beauty of Tori’s artistry and wry sense of dark humour.

Following the dissolution of a previous musical project in early 2018, Zietsch left Melbourne and moved to the seaside town of Brighton in the UK. It was there she began to work on solo material, drawing from bouts of homesickness, basking in the lengthy European summer hours, and writing non-stop. She returned to Melbourne in late 2019 with a SoundCloud account full to capacity of demo uploads, enlisting Tom Iansek (Big Scary, #1 Dads, The Paper Kites, Hockey Dad) to produce and record the songs that would eventually form, To Enjoy is the Only Thing.

Zietsch only started releasing singles last Autumn, yet she has connected easily and earnestly with a global fanbase. Partnering with labels Pieater (in Australia) and Partisan (UK and ROW), Zietsch now has fans at The Line Of Best Fit, The New Cue, Dork, NPR Music, Stereogum, Paste, KCRW, Gorilla vs Bear, Consequence, triple j, UPROXX, and more, for her devastating yet piercingly beautiful music, as well as over 3 million streams, a sold out debut headline set and upcoming shows lined up in Australia with Julia Jacklin and Angie McMahon. Pre-order for the album is now available. Fans will receive a zine with all vinyl pre-orders, and bundles include a tie-dye tee with the LP logo up-titled to To “Fang It” is the Only Thing (a cheeky, personal saying of Tori’s that also inspired one of her tattoos).
