Met een beetje vertraging (mijn excuses daarvoor) zou ik toch graag nog even uw aandacht willen vestigen op de jongste video van de Nederlands/Belgische band Epinikion. Wat ik vooral apprecieer aan deze dames en heren is hun ongelooflijke DIY mentaliteit en overgave. Kijk maar eens naar het mooie resultaat dat ze met beperkte middelen neerzetten voor deze video van Welcome to the Wonderful World of Jealousy. De video werd gereleased op 21 april, samen met hun debuutalbum Inquisition (ook te vinden op bv. Spotify)
Epinikion bevind zich in het spectrum van de symphonische metal, een genre dat zichzelf helaas een beetje schaakmat heeft gezet. Deze band springt er naar mijn gevoel toch enigzins uit door hun originele zanglijnen en mooie melodieën.

After Robert and Renate had ended their topsport(coaching) careers, Robert came up with the idea to do something in music. The combination of his electric guitarplay and Renate’s classical piano almost naturally lead to the choice for symphonic metal music. As a bandname they chose ‘Epinikion’, which means ‘hymn for the winner’. In Ancient Greece the heroic stories of athletes were sung in an epinicion after their victories at major events. A phoenix was added to the bandname, as a sign of athletes resurrected from their ashes as musicians.
It was soon apparent that the music was received well and the toy keyboard of Renate’s son was exchanged for a real synthesizer. From the very beginning Epinikion combined heavy guitar riffs with subtle progressive metal influences, completed with harmonic and sometimes bombastic orchestral lines. This combination leads to an own sound, appreciated by a wide audience.
