De uit Haarlem afkomstige funk/pop/ska/rockband Chef’Special heeft vrijdag 6 maart een nieuw album de wereld ingeslingerd, Unfold. Het was eigenlijk de bedoeling dat deze band in Amerika iets heel groots zou gaan opnemen, maar het is toch ‘maar’ bij Europa gebleven.
Joshua Nolet en zijn kompanen beginnen gewaagd, want als Blue Fairy Magic de standaard is, kan het album weer de schappen in. Maar dat is niet de standaard, zoals de single laat inzien. Trouble biedt de luisteraar waar-ie op wachtte: een leuk, catchy Chef’Special-nummer dat redelijk in het rijtje bekendere werken past.
Het titelnummer Unfold is een prachtige opmaat naar het echte funky werk, Wildfire. De beat wordt voortgezet en iets opgevoerd in Maybe This Is Love.
Unfold is een lekker album en zal menigeen wel kunnen bekoren. Of het Europese aftrek vindt, durf ik te betwijfelen. Sterker nog, nu het geen nummers bevat die zich kunnen meten aan knallers als Amigo, Nicotine of In Your Arms, weet ik het wel zeker.

Since their formation in 2008, Dutch band Chef’Special has released three albums, toured extensively and rapidly built a fanbase across Europe and the US. The band’s unique blend of hip-hop, rock and reggae is an exciting sound for longtime fans and new listeners alike. A huge part of Chef’Special’s success are their already legendary live performances in which the audience is as vital to the experience as the band themselves. Appearances in world-famous venues like Madison Square Garden and the Red Rocks amphitheater (as a support act for Twenty One Pilots), as well as a tour through (inter-) national festivals (including Lowlands and Sziget) have left the band craving further world domination. Although Chef’Special’s musical palette encompasses various genres, the band has a very recognizable sound in which their own emotions and experiences are front and center. That’s especially true when it comes to the Chef’Special breakout single “In Your Arms” about singer Joshua’s father passing away. Their latest released full length album is called ‘Amigo’. Central theme to the album is having a curious attitude towards the world.
