Dit heeft héél wat voeten in de aarde gehad. Toen ik op 7 mei 2019 een gesprek had met Dobber Beverly en Cammie Gilbert, n.a.v. het optreden van hun band Oceans Of Slumber in De Casino, lieten beide me muziek van een nieuw project horen. Ver verwijderd van wat ze met OOS deden, ook al zat die donkere toon erin en natuurlijk de machtige stem van Cammie. Het project had een naam (ik laat die achterwege omdat die niet meer van toepassing is en ik destijds alles in vertrouwen mocht horen), een eerste single stond klaar alsook een compleet album dat zou verschijnen op 20 september van dat jaar. Ik was meteen mee en kon de muziek zelfs linken aan een label. Ik sprak erover met beide partijen, zette een eerste contact op waaruit bleek dat dit inderdaad een match was én ... tja, er gebeurde nu éénmaal van alles waardoor het project 'on hold' werd geplaatst.
Drie jaar later gooide OOS het roer om met Starlight And Ash en kregen we een deel van de vibe te horen waar dat project uit 2019 rond gebouwd was: een southern gothic sfeertje, flarden Nick Cave, dark pop,... en Cammie als centrale spil. Dood en begraven dacht ik toen, maar kijk, onder de monniker Cammie Beverly komt het er nu toch van. De eerste single House Of Grief is alvast een getrouwe, zij het geremixte en vollere, weergave van destijds en doet me reikhalzend uitkijken naar de songs die nog moeten komen. Zijn het deze van weleer of zit er ander, nieuw materiaal tussen? Wat de keuze ook mag zijn, dit album wordt er eentje van een ongekend niveau. Nu ja, ongekend, fans van Starlight And Ash mogen in hun pollekes wrijven, dat kan ik zonder twijfel meegeven. En welk label brengt al dat moois uit? Yep, de Zweden met wie ik beide prachtige muzikanten in contact heb gebracht. De cirkel is dan toch rond.
