Koen Buyse, Zornik @ Ancienne Belgique (Brussel, BE)
Last Saturday, Zornik delivered an electrifying performance at Ancienne Belgique, leaving the audience exhilarated and thoroughly entertained. The performance started with an off-voice announcing that the band would play Zornik's second album "One-Armed Bandit" in its entirety, from start to finish, included some songs the band have never performed live before, an album recorded in Malta in 2003. The recording ended as a reminder for everyone that they were in a safe space to just enjoy, dance, scream and get wild. With dynamic vocals, tight instrumentals, and an engaging stage presence, never forgetting any corner of the big AB room, Zornik left concert-goers, from big old time fans to newer additions, buzzing with excitement. From anthemic rockers to introspective ballads, Zornik showcased the depth and versatility of their musical catalog, each song resonating with its own unique energy and emotion. Frontman Koen Buyse's charismatic stage presence commanded attention, his powerful vocals soaring above the driving rhythms and infectious melodies laid down by the rest of the band, who were a perfect blend. Photography wise, it was an ideal setting to experiment with lights and composition, anticipating Koen moves, to try to get those killer shots. I even got to have a tongue out picture from the drummer Marijn Horemans. Even the audience was the most respectful I’ve met, allowing me to take pictures from different angles at all times. One of the big highlights of the concert was Koen’s jump to the crowd and getting everyone on the floor, and engaging them to dance and jump, something that was not really happening in all corners of the room.
Zornik's concert at AB not only showcased their own remarkable talents but also introduced audiences to the captivating voice and sound of guest artist Emmy d'Arc. As the opening act for the evening, Emmy d'Arc charmed everyone with her enchanting performance, leaving an indelible mark on all who arrived early to enjoy her show and witness her artistry. Songs like "Wish I'd Never Met You" and "White Flag" showcased Emmy d'Arc's exceptional songwriting prowess, each verse painting vivid pictures of love, loss, and the eternal quest for belonging. Her voice, at once ethereal and earthy, resonated with a raw authenticity that was impossible to ignore. But perhaps the most captivating aspect of Emmy d'Arc's performance was the palpable sense of intimacy she cultivated with her audience, sharing anecdotes between songs and insights with disarming vulnerability. So much that even when her loop pedal was not working, she faced it with humbleness and took the time to make the song work, right until the end when the pedal stopped working again and she didn’t loose her focus nor her connection with the audience, that just gifted her with a bigger applause.
