Declan McKenna @ Ancienne Belgique (Brussel, BE)
Last Tuesday Declan McKenna performed at Ancienne Belgique’s groote zaal, with the upper balconies closed, in what was a thrilling night. Since the moment he sat foot on stage, the audience immediately responded singing along the lyrics of his first song "Sympathy", and this energy went on for the whole performance, showing that Belgium has a big fan club for this band. On of the funny moments of the night was Declan’s confession about thinking that Belgians are always trying to mess up with him, for never knowing which language he has to speak. Declan’s energetic presence and undeniable talent, armed with his guitar and backed by a tight band, delivered a set that spanned his eclectic discography, blending indie rock anthems with introspective ballads to end the main part of the show, playing two piano ballads before the encore. His dynamic stage presence and raw, emotive vocals brought each song to life, captivating the crowd from start to finish, solidifying his status as one of indie rock's most exciting young artists. The support act for the night, and for Declan McKenna’s European tour, was Soft Launch, an Irish quintet that was founded in 2022, who recently launched their catchy single “Cartwheels”.
