Mijn principe: wanneer ik een album over de hele lijn minstens 'goed' vind (lees: de muziek raakt me), dan schrijf ik erover. De laatste tijd ontdek ik echter zoveel nieuwe releases dat ik - vooral om tijdsredenen - een aantal moet skippen. Heb ik de files niet minstens een volle week op voorhand en/of raakt het me niet genoeg, sorry dan, maar ik hou m'n dierbare tijd voor iets anders.
Zo het geval bij het debuutalbum van de jonge Zach Person. De lead single opende mijn oren en vestigde mijn aandacht, de files raakten echter niet tijdig tot bij me én een eerste luisterbeurt deed me niet meteen in m'n pen kruipen, dus schoof ik het album opzij.
Deze week bleek ik toch een héél klein beetje tijd te hebben, omwille van een andere release waar ik naar uitkeek en die niet echt overtuigde, dus gaf ik dit album een tweede kans. Ben ik nu plots omgetoverd tot grote fan? Neen, dat nu ook weer niet. Wel heeft Person gewoon te veel talent in huis om hem zomaar te negeren én is pr dame Jennifer natuurlijk zo immens innemend dat ik haar niet wil ontgoochelen (wink).
Laat me stellen dat - wat mij betreft - Zach Person misschien best een tweede ep had uitgebracht i.p.v. de vijf songs van zijn afgelopen jaar verschenen ep samen te gooien met een rits nieuwe nummers, al snap ik de reden waarom natuurlijk ook (covid-19 situatie, niet de hort op kunnen, van de nood een deugd maken, etc.). De eerste vier tracks hier (samen met Let Me Know allemaal uit 2020) geven een goed beeld van wat de jonge kerel kan en waar hij naartoe wil: zijn hedendaagse, radiovriendelijke 'take' op blues- en rootsmuziek brengen en dat op een zo rauw en 'eigen' mogelijke manier. Bovendien heeft de muzikant de juiste looks om ook visueel 'marketable' te zijn en dus een ruim publiek te kunnen bereiken. Muzikaal laveert hij tussen een jonge versie van Gary Clark Jr., de 'ballen' en moderne touch van Larkin Poe (ik zie hen gewoon samen on the road gaan) en het partygehalte van Tyler Bryant.
Troeven zijn de stem en de gitaar (en die looks natuurlijk). Waar er zeker nog aan geschaafd kan worden zijn de songwriting skills, but hey, de Houstonian is jong genoeg om daar werk van te maken. Om nog eens te vergelijken: de dames van Larkin Poe bereikten ook pas een piek met Venom&Faith, hun vierde album (+ een rits ep's). Voor mij zit de drop off op dit album vooral in de (nieuwe) toegevoegde nummers die niet het niveau van de eerste songs halen. Ik gebruikte bij het opnieuw beluisteren net te veel de skipknop maar luisterde met véél plezier terug naar het begin van dit album.
Laat jullie echter niet leiden door mijn indrukken en laat die voor wat ze zijn. Zoals steeds valt er maar één ding te doen: luisteren en zelf oordelen! Releasedatum: 9 april 2021

Hailing from Houston, Texas, Person was first launched into the public eye in 2016 when he competed on the 15th season of American Idol; he quickly became a favorite with celebrity judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr with his indie-rock-infused, pop style. The experience gave him his first taste of the industry, but he is far from your typical Idol artist.
Following American Idol, Person was openly embraced by the Texas blues scene, becoming a House of Blues Music Forward Foundation Alumnus, and representing the Houston Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge, a competition featuring some of the foremost blues artists/guitarists from around the world; these opportunities would later lead to Person sharing the stage with legendary acts such as Buddy Guy and Robert Cray.
Person moved to Austin, Texas in 2017, where he was quickly discovered and signed by industry veteran, Christopher Durst, a music/photography entrepreneur and former rock photographer known for his work with Willie Nelson, Seasick Steve and more. Person and Durst then partnered with electronic music producer Will Loconto and immediately began production on Person’s debut EP. Loconto was chosen for his unique ability to blend indie rock, pop, and electronica, while also showcasing Person’s love for roots music and blues guitar. Person’s EP/LP features his long-time musical collaborator and eclectic drummer, Jake Wyble, who he met in Austin, Texas, and is actually from Cumberland County, New Jersey, the same area in which Person was born and lived until he was three years old, though they never knew each other. After nearly two years in the studio, their collaboration would result in Person’s highly-electric, debut single, “All Shook Up,” a completely reimagined and modernized rendition of the Elvis Presley classic; this has earned Person a loyal fan base in indie and mainstream music. “Zach is the future of American indie music - the illegitimate love child of The Black Keys and Lenny Kravitz,” says producer Will Loconto.
Person has since partnered with indie rock label, BlackDenim Records, which has unapologetically positioned Person as their flagship artist and given him complete creative control.
