Amai, wat heeft dit plaatje mij stevig bij mijn edele noten. Ik hoorde Witherfall al album na EP steeds beter worden maar nu hebben ze toch wel het ultieme prijsbeestje op ons los gelaten. En dat op amper 4 jaar tijd. Beloftevol, noemen ze dat.
Witherfall is eigenlijk het geesteskind van zanger/toetsenist Joseph Michael (Sanctuary, ex-White Wizzard) en gitarist Jake Dryer (ex-Iced Earth, ex-White Wizzard, ex-Kobra and the Lotus) met de hulp van bassist Anthony Crawford en meesterdrummer Marco Minnemann (teveel huidige en ex-projecten om op te noemen). Jack & Jo zijn continu bezig met samen muziek schrijven en gaan tot het uiterste om hun songs tot in de details uit te werken. Er zit dus een zwaar progressieve kant aan maar er sluipen invloeden uit allerhande nevengenres naar binnen. Geen zweverig gekneuter dus maar een volwaardige dzjoef op uw muil. In het geval van The Curse of Autumn zowaar zelf 11 dzjoefen.
Voor dit album wilden de heren een meer heavy geluid creëren dan op hun voorgangers en dus werd Jake’s (toen nog) Iced Earth patron, Jon Schaffer, erbij gehaald om de productie te verzorgen. Schaffer’s gevoel voor muziek is gelukkig pakken beter dan zijn iets-minder-gezond-politiek verstand en hij voorzag Witherfall dan ook van een geweldig bombast dat op de correcte momenten toch doorspekt en/of afgewisseld wordt met akoestische passages en harmonieuze vocalen.
We worden zelfs even op het verkeerde been gezet want na de intro (Deliver Us Into the Arms of Eternal Silence) barst The Last Scar los als een volwaardige Teutonic Thrash song, inclusief (g)rauwe vocalen. Voelt u die losse tanden en proeft u dat bloed in uw mond? Dat mooie meisje met het rondenbordje was nog niet eens uit de ring en daar kregen we al de eerste uppercut. Met As I Lie Awake en Another Face worden we al dansend afgetast maar het 8 minuten durende Tempest is weer een muzikale oplawaai van jewelste.
Het troubadour achtige titelnummer is niet meer dan een kort intermezzo dat het album als het ware in twee deelt. Nu wordt het muzikaal pas echt menens. Het is een aaneengeschakelde opvolging van een 4 nummers tellende trip die begint met het meesterlijk heavy The Other Side of Fear en sluit met … And They All Blew Away, een vijftien minuten durend oorgasme. Waarna we gelukkig even terug op adem mogen komen met een akoestische maar duister kille cover van een Kansas nummer, Long Time. Hetgeen net voldoende energie geeft om nog eens op repeat all knop te drukken.
We zijn nog maar begin maart en ik kan alweer een kandidaat-plaat-van-het-jaar bijvoegen aan mijn lijstje. Dat wordt nog een hele uitdaging in december, indien dit zo doorgaat. Ach … luxe probleem!

Although two years separate WITHERFALL's third opus from their celebrated A Prelude to Sorrow album, it feels like a long time. Even with the Vintage EP bridging the gap, the wait has been cruel. Well, WITHERFALL legions the tease of what's to come is out there. Fronted by a riveting, high-budget Zev Deans (Ghost, Behemoth) video for "As I Lie Awake," a visualizer video for "The Last Scar,"and the premiere of the utterly wild "Another Face," the Curse of Autumn finds vocalist/keyboardist Joseph Michael (Sanctuary), guitarist JakeDreyer (Iced Earth), bassist Anthony Crawford (Chon), and drummer Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats) with a genuine metal classic in their collective midst.
For Curse of Autumn, WITHERFALL hired the best of the best. Jon Schaffer (Demons & Wizards, Iced Earth) was brought on to helm the production duties, while Jim Morris (Savatage, Death) was sourced to engineer and mix at Independence Hall and Morrisound Recordings, respectively. The duo then enlisted Bradley Cook (Slash, Foo Fighters, Chris Cornell) to track the drums at Doghouse Studios. To master, WITHERFALL appointed Tom Morris (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) to master at Morrisound Recording. The diadem of talent, as conducted by Michael and Dreyer, spent almost 30 days collectively on the sonic marvel that is Curse of Autumn.
From the expressive songwriting and the group's ability to transform popular song into the album's narrative to the outstanding class of contributors and overall artistic vision, WITHERFALL are destined for the highest (heavy metal) highs on Curse of Autumn. Perhaps hyperbolic now but a hindsight view on the accomplishment contained herein will posit WITHERFALL among the impressive ranks of Opeth, Queensrÿche, Dream Theater, and Megadeth. As for the next chapter in the group's impressive story, it's being written as we speak.
