Na een heel decennium wachten op iets nieuws, komt het Zweedse collectief VILDHJARTA met een nieuw album. De release op 15 oktober brengt ook direct iets groots. Maar liefst een duo pack cd of lp met in totaal zeventien nummers.
Het album genaamd måsstaden under vatten klokt een 80 minuten aan stevig atmosferische metal. Met deze release pakken de heren eigenlijk weer terug en bouwen verder op het donkere verhaal van het in 2011 uitgebrachte måsstaden.
VILDHJARTA word vergeleken met bands zoals TOOL en Meshuggah, echter brengt deze nieuwe plaat toch wel een versteviging van een hele eigen identiteit aan dit collectief. måsstaden under vatten klinkt lekker stevig met toch wel een bijna bombastisch gevoel dat je heerlijk het duistere sprookje in laat lopen.
Met zeventien songs is het moeilijk om er een heel verslag over te schrijven maar het nummer den heligen ander valt echt wel op. Dit nummer dwingt je gewoon om echt even te gaan zitten luisteren en vooral te genieten. Met name het intro en de bass-partij maken dit tot een heel fijn stukje muziek.
Echt een serieus rustmoment krijg je pas ruim over de helft, bij phantom assassin. Dat voelt eigenlijk als een bijna drie minuut durende intro dat zijn naam volledige eer aan doet. Als je je ogen sluit dan zie je het bijna voor je, de schaduw van de sluipende killer.
Ook al is phantom assassin niet een intro, het nummer vloeit qua geluid en sfeer wel goed door in sunset sunrise. Deze doet ook een beetje aan alsof je iets besluipt en dan toehapt met vocalen en stevige rifjes. En deze rifjes maken dit nummer zo fijn.
De band zegt zelf in hun intro: “Art happens when art happens,” en ook al heeft het tien jaar geduurd, art did happen!

With a decade between releases, VILDHJARTA remain as inscrutable and as close to anonymity as a band can be. Musically and aesthetically, they invite comparisons to TOOL or Meshuggah – but bring in their own unmatched atmosphere. VILDHJARTA's down-tuned, staccato riffs and pulverizing grooves are the sound of music stripped to its essence. Yet, the Swedish collective’s long- awaited album, “måsstaden under vatten”, is far more than a recitation of djent values. Clocking in at 80 minutes, it thematically picks up where the dark Swedish fable of 2011’s “Måsstaden” left off and delivers on the promise that record hinted at. Tracks like the recently released “när de du älskar kommer tillbaka från de döda” finds VILDHJARTA’s music on the move, suggesting a newfound subtlety and sophistication amidst the bombast and beauty in the breakdown.
Formed in 2005 in Hudiksvall, Sweden, VILDHJARTA has become an institution of omission. An enigma of a career. Anyone familiar with their history knows that VILDHJARTA has had a canny existence from its demo-era start, building a
fanbase via early social media and message board-driven virality as far back as 2010. From their origins, they were unafraid to embrace the untraditional. VILDHJARTA spread links to the band’s tracks and rallied behind the war-cry of THALL, a word that has almost become synonymous to the band’s name.
Since dropping a minute of new live music in 2016, the band's focus has almost entirely been on the new album with drummer and now noted producer, Buster Odeholm (also known for his work with Born of Osiris, Shadow of Intent and playing guitar in Humanity’s Last Breath amongst others) heavily involved in the production, mixing and mastering of the music. Visual artist Rickard Westman, who did art for VILDHJARTA's debut as well as their “Thousands of Evils”- EP in 2013 has also returned to the equation to reprise his disturbing visual iconography that continues to tell a tale of a mythical, dark world far away from ours. Recent live activity has also been sparse: the only recent notable showing as headliner at 2018’s Euroblast festival. Yet, even with this new album on the horizon, the band itself makes few promises for the future beyond a dim glimmer and a handful of live dates scheduled for 2022.
Says the band: “Art happens when art happens.” In 2021, VILDHJARTA returns with an unforgettable artistic statement in “måsstaden under vatten”. The sound of music is rarely this challenging, unforgettable and worth the wait.
