Steve Von Till maakt sinds 1989 deel uit van de post-/avant-gardemetalband Neurosis, waar hij het gebrul deelt, en brutale gitaarmuren opzet, met oprichter Scott Kelly. Zijn solowerk is in tegenstelling zeer ingetogen: de man maakt beklijvende, melancholische folksongs in een psychedelische gothic americana sfeer, waarbij hij eerder vertelt en gromt. Op het in 2020 verschenen No Wilderness Deep Enough ging hij nog een stap verder en verliet hij de traditionele songstructuren voor een soort op muziek gezette voordrachten met enkel wat ambient elektronica, strijkers en piano als basisinstrumenten. Die trend zet hij nu door op zijn nieuwe album. Hij laat daarbij nu ook de stem achterwege.
Wie geen fan is van het solowerk van Von Till, dat uiterst somber en bij momenten zéér eentonig klinkt, die zal zich ook niet kunnen vinden in dit werk. Opnieuw geen vaste structuren, maar een filmisch klanktapijt waarbij de cello, viool, piano, french horn en mellotron centraal staan. De man laat doorheen de zes vrij lange soundscapes horen hoe betekenisloos de mens in dit geheel is, hoe we ons maar beter schikken en proberen te genieten van alle geboden pracht, zonder te proberen alles naar onze hand te zetten. Hij neemt ons als het ware mee op een hallucinante tocht doorheen die pracht. Zonder woorden.
Alle nummers lijken gelijkaardig, maar als je de tijd neemt en je overgeeft aan de wereld die Von Till hier schept, dan hoor je ruim voldoende nuances. De ene keer neemt bv. cello of viool de lead, terwijl op een ander moment kille pianoklanken of zelfs een french horn op de voorgrond komen. Het is wel steeds een mellotron dat de vette grondlaag verzorgt en daar ook diverse geluidjes overheen sprenkelt.
Zin om de ogen te sluiten en volledig te ontspannen, zowel lichamelijk als spiritueel? Vraag dan aan je masseuse bij een volgende beurt dit album af te spelen i.p.v. de gewoonlijke shit die ze daar laten horen.

Steve Von Till has made a life’s work out of seeking the elemental. For some listeners, the album may recall the work of modern composers like Jóhann Jóhannsson, Brian Eno or Gavin Bryars. For Von Till, it’s about surrendering to the spirit of place—and to the original intent behind his 2020 solo album, No Wilderness Deep Enough. That album marked a significant first for Von Till: It was his first solo record without a guitar in hand. Instead, Von Till intoned powerful and thought-provoking lyrics over piano, cello, mellotron and analog synthesizers. A Deep Voiceless Wilderness is that same album without Von Till’s words.
“This is how I originally heard this piece of music,” he says. “Without the voice as an anchor or earthbound narrative, these pieces have a broader wingspan. They become something else entirely and unfold in a more expansive way. The depth of the synths, juxtaposed with the strings and French horn, have space to develop and allow the listener to imagine their own story.”
