Het is al enkele volgers opgevallen dat ik nogal veel country(pop)songs post. Wanneer het op full albums aankomt, ben ik echter een pak kritischer. Van alle young rising stars heb ik dit jaar enkel Twenty Something van Alana Springsteen opgepikt. Reckless van Morgan Wade dateert reeds van 2021 en haar laatste album kon ik niet echt smaken. Ik kan gerust stellen dat ik 90% van de releases aan me heb voorbij laten gaan. Waarom dan deze? Ik probeer de belangrijkste redenen hieronder weer te geven.
Muziek, dat is gevoel en daar ga ik niet al te veel over lullen. Ik voel het of ik voel het niet, period! Sophia Scott is één van de vele talentvolle sterretjes aan het countryfirmament, niet 'beter' of 'slechter' dan het gros van haar collega's. Net als Springsteen echter, waarmee ze trouwens onlangs de hort op was in de V.S., raakt ze bij mij die gevoelige snaar. Puur subjectief dus.
Dan is er de stem, voor mij een niet onbelangrijke factor om te bepalen of ik een muzikant/band meermaals kan beluisteren of er toch aan voorbij ga. Scott heeft pipes en weet die op de juiste manier in te zetten. Niet te veel twang, geen vette southern brawl, maar wel bakken soul. Ik zou bijna een vergelijk durven maken met een jonge Aguilera die de vele krulletjes en tierlantijntjes achterwege laat en niet doorlopend staat te belten. De power is er echter en die laat ze zo nu en dan eens bovendrijven.
Uiteindelijk zijn er natuurlijk de nummers zelf. Die kan je op haar debuutalbum indelen in twee categorieën. Enerzijds zijn er de partynummers, de vrolijke barnstompers, liedjes waarop je de feestvierders ziet line dancen of barn dancen. Eerste single Boots, Jeans & Jesus, opener What I'm Wearing Tonight, No You Didn't en het grappige Mullet Over zijn hier mooie voorbeelden van. Anderzijds heb je de sterke, soulvolle ballads zoals Lipstick on You (incl. een gospel koortje op het einde), City Limits, Anything but the Truth en het prachtige Watering Roses, stuk voor stuk goed geschreven nummers en stuk voor stuk knap gebracht. Tot slot zijn er de vlotte popsongs waarbij enkel You Problem leuk is. De beide andere zijn een stuk te 'plastic' om te overtuigen.
Barstool Confessions is een album voor wie houdt van vlotte, radiovriendelijke country(pop) gedragen door een zangeres met een stem die de clichés van het genre overstijgt. Ik word er alvast vrolijk van en kijk uit naar de dag waarop ook zij de grote plas oversteekt.
