Enige tijd terug zochten drie muzikanten, die alle drie behoorlijk thuis waren in de black metal, elkaar op. Wie dit waren en op welke manier zij hun sporen in dit genre hebben verdiend, vertelt het verhaal niet, maar feit is dat ze klikten en besloten samen verder te gaan als Serpents Oath. Ze doken de studio in en vrijdag 4 december komt hun album uit, getiteld Nihil. Omdat ik verder niets van de heren weet, rest mij slechts hun album te bespreken.
Iets meer dan een maand geleden kwam Speaking in Tongues al uit. Op het album wordt dit nummer voorafgegaan door Vox Mortis, een heerlijk onheilspellend intro waarin het lijkt alsof er parseltongue wordt gesproken. Liefhebbers van Harry Potter weten dan dat ik het heb over sisselspraak. Uiteindelijk rijst het vermoeden dat het Latijn is. Echter, gevolgd door Speaking in Tongues, zou het wel tof zijn als het ook inderdaad sisselspraak zou zijn. Zanger Tes Re Oth maakt aan het begin van dit nummer meteen duidelijk wat men van de rest van het album kan verwachten: “Me invocare vos in tenebris immortueos deus venire ad me,” oftewel: “Ik roep u op, ondoden, om in het donker naar mij toe te komen.” Goeie morgen, dan!
Al snel blijkt het te gaan om rauwe, agressieve en strakke black metal. Dat de bandleden roots hebben in dit genre is dus wel duidelijk en bewezen. Donderende drums, uitgelaten riffs en diep, rauw geschreeuw zet de geest open voor de komst van Satan. Gaandeweg het nummer wordt echter de werkelijke betekenis van de titel duidelijk, als blijkt dat in het nummer niet alleen gegrunt wordt in het Latijn en Engels, maar ook in het Frans en Duits.
Het vervolg van Nihil is al even strak en rauw. Tot Thrice Crushed, hetgeen weer even een rustmomentje is en een voorbode lijkt te zijn voor Malediction. Bijzonder dat deze drie muzikanten een dergelijke bak herrie weten voort te brengen. Dat geldt overigens eveneens voor nummers als Serpents of Eight of The Beast Reborn.
Respect of Satan be with you, heren van Serpents Oath. En u, nietige stervelingen, kan ik niet anders dan adviseren dit album bij deze of gene heiden onder de kerstboom te sodemieteren!

SERPENTS OATH is a new creature comprised of three adepts of Belgium’s extreme metal scene. As soon as they met up and started creating together, they realized they were establishing a very different entity. Hence they decided to leave the past behind and give birth to this new Beast. Their rebellious debut album "Nihil" is set to take the world by storm with its relentless and unforgiving version of nihilistic Black Metal. Expect no remorse from this opus, only crushing riffs, pounding drums and terrorizing screams pushing the limits of a music genre already marked by chaos and death.
Tes Re Oth had the following to say: “The vision behind the band is one of transformation. This shines through first and foremost in the lyrics and is carried through in the cover art and other visuals. The transformation is that of an individual striving to become transhuman with the ultimate goal of beating even Death. This is the ultimate rebellion as even Death is not accepted as a given.”
The album was conjured at the renowned Stage One Studio with Andy Classen (BELPHEGOR, LEGION OF THE DAMNED) as the master of ceremony. The black arts for the artwork of "Nihil" were performed by the hands of Néstor Avalos, known for his work for bands like DARK FUNERAL & BLOODBATH. The artwork shows the UR rebellion, that of Lucifer leading the War in Heaven. Only this time the outcome is different and the rebellion succeeds, visualized by Lucifer casting out the Arch Angel Michael and therefore establishing the ultimate victory of free will.
