Stel dat ik eens een review zou mogen schrijven over een album in één woord, dan zou dat, voor wat betreft While Our World Dissolves zijn: “LUISTEREN!!!” Maar ja….we leven helaas niet in een zodanig Utopia dat een review in één woord op prijs wordt gesteld. Bovendien heb ik veel te weinig gezag om met dat ene woord ‘LUISTEREN’ veel mensen over te halen om dit nieuwe album van het Belgische Reject the Sickness ook inderdaad een aan een luistertest te onderwerpen.
Dan maar even uitgebreider op het album ingaan en hopen dat ik de lezer aldus kan overtuigen van het feit dat dit vijftal een zodanig product heeft afgeleverd, dat het bijna onmogelijk wordt om er niet naar te luisteren.
Kort over de band. Reject the Sickness is, zoals gezegd, een club van vijf stoere mannen die melodische deathmetal maken. While Our World Dissolves is hun derde full length album, het eerste bij hun nieuwe platenmaatschappij, WormHoleDeath Records.
Het album begint met een van de lekkerste manieren om een plaat te beginnen: zwaar, ritmisch slagwerk. Niet te ingewikkeld, geen tientallen BPM, maar gewoon ritmisch geram op de trommels. Dan volgt, alvorens Guy Vercruysse zijn strot opentrekt en één van de beste deathmetalstemmen van de Benelux laat horen, een tekst, uitgesproken door een vrouw. Waarschijnlijk is het afkomstig uit een of andere film, maar als je een beetje de achtergrond van de band kent – met name die van diezelfde zanger Vercruysse – besef je dat het een voorproefje zal zijn van hetgeen veelvuldig aan bod zal komen. Vercruysse werkt bij Jeugdzorg en hetgeen hij daar meemaakt vormt de basis voor veel van de nummers van Reject the Sickness. Soms zelfs heel duidelijk, zoals bijvoorbeeld in The Furrow of our Soul.
Eigenlijk is alles goed aan While Our World Dissolves. Niet alleen de zang is erg goed. Muzikaal maken de heren ook een erg goede beurt. Zoran van Bellegem, bijvoorbeeld, is een zodanig begenadigd gitarist, dat het een lust voor het oor is om hem te horen spelen. Iedere solo die hij speelt, is kristalhelder en spot on. In een nummer als Burning Soil, waarin Van Bellegem samen speelt met Ruben van der Beken, komt daar nog eens een laagje bovenop. Wonderschoon.
Het album ademt van alle kanten de hoge technische standaard waarnaar de mannen gestreefd hebben. Bij tijd en wijle doet het heel erg denken aan werk van Gojira. Dan, wanneer je bijvoorbeeld luistert naar The Plague of Life, komen invloeden van Fear Factory voorbij. Maar hoogstaande technische metal all the way.
Een bijzondere shout out verdienen ook drummer Jannick Govaert en bassist Jonas Messiaen. Het tempo dat deze twee mannen als ritmesectie aanhouden, kan alleen maar respect opleveren. Ik heb nog niet het genoegen gehad Reject the Sickness live te zien, maar ik kan me voorstellen dat een optreden voor alle vijf, maar voor deze laatste twee in het bijzonder, topsport is.
Ik kom toch nog even terug op het begin van dit stuk en bedenk me dat ik deze review tóch gewoon in één woord ga schrijven: LUISTEREN!!!

Reject the Sickness is a five piece metalband from Belgium whose lyrical concept deals with outcast youth. Abuse, neglect, self harm and how to deal with the aforementioned are the main themes. The lyrics are fictional although Guy, the vocalist, can draw inspiration from his job as a social worker. It is a walk through the darkest reaches of the human psyche. Musically, progressive and ambient elements are threaded into a blend of thrash and death metal that is melodic without compromising on aggression.
Guy Vercruysse and Ruben Van der Beken joined forces in 2008 searching for band members. In 2010, with a full line-up, they recorded their first demo "Slack Muscles Heal" and in 2013 a first mini-cd "Bloodstained Eyes" was released digitally via Clean and Dirty and physically through Deathwake Recordings. These were re-released together in 2015 via Headshot Records. In 2013, current drummer Jannick Govaert joined the fold.
The first full length, "Chains of Solitude" was released in 2015 by Danish metal label Mighty Music. With this album the band played Graspop Metal Meeting and toured the UK, expanding its fanbase in Belgium and beyond.
Their sophomore album, 2018's "The Weight of Silence", also on Mighty Music, sounded fresh and raw and very melodic. This step to musical maturity earned them a spot on the Slovenian Metaldays festival. In the wake of this album the lead guitar and bass player parted ways with the band and were replaced with Zoran Van Bellegem and Jonas Messiaen.
With a new line-up comes new direction and in Reject the Sickness' case this means more melody in a fiercer, darker, aggresive style; showcased on 2019's "The New Chapter". Promoting this 3-track EP kept the band busy playing festivals and gigs, while working on their next full length.
Reject The Sickness signed with WormHoleDeath Records in early 2021 and their album ‘While Our World Dissolves’ will be released worldwide on May 28, 2021 through this label. There will also be a Japanese release. The album will be promoted in the Benelux by Hard Life Promo, in the German areas by Gordeon Music and the rest of the world by WormHoleDeath. It is the band's hardest, rawest and most melodic work to date. With this release, Reject The Sickness will conquer an authentic place in the melodic death / thrash landscape.
