Na eerder al het sterke Aathma (2017) te hebben uitgebracht, is hier eindelijk het nieuwe album Metanoia van de uit Andorra afkomstige progressieve death metalband Persefone. Metanoia is alweer het zesde full-length album van Persefone en laat een band in topvorm horen die zichzelf verder heeft ontwikkeld.
Metanoia zit weer vol tempowisselingen, extreme en clean vocalen die elkaar afwisselen en technisch sterke gitaarriffs die uit je speakers knallen. Met de titeltrack gaat het album rustig en opbouwend van start, begeleid door de mooie vocals van Leprous zanger Einar Solberg. Het duurt niet lang voordat het album dan echt hard van start gaat met Katabasis. Een track die vooral hard en sferisch is, met sterke contrasten tussen het meer melodische en technische werk en de meer extreme kant van Persefone. Iets wat we op dit album vaker te horen krijgen. Het zit vooral ijzersterk en overtuigend in elkaar. Achitecture Of The I begint met een zeer technische, djenty riff partij, voordat de extreme vocalen van Marc zich erbij toevoegen. Het nummer is voor een groot deel meer death, minder melodisch, meer gitaar(solo) gedreven, waarbij het melodische en de cleans later in de track pas volgen. Na de intensiteit van de eerste tracks volgt wat ademruimte met Leap of Faith, een ruim vijf minuten durende instrumentale, epische track. Het epische en filmische wordt voortgezet in Aware of Being Watched, waarin de zang van Mereth Soltdvedt de sfeer versterkt, en de band een meer sferische, zelfs symfonische kant laat zien. Iets wat ook in tracks als Consciousness (Pt. 3) te horen is. Met zijn 11 minuten is dit meteen het langste nummer op het album, al zou je de drieluik Anabasis natuurlijk ook als langste track kunnen meetellen.
De band experimenteert ook meer op Metanoia, waardoor je bijvoorbeeld meer elektronische invloeden hoort. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de single Merkabah, wat tevens één van de sterkste tracks op het album is, of Anabasis.
Met Metanoia levert Persefone vooral een overtuigend geheel af, vol meeslepende melodieën, technische riffs, epische orkesten, op momenten zelfs cinematografische stukken, maar vooral progressieve technische death metal van een zeer hoog niveau. De progressieve tracks zijn complex en dynamisch, zijn sterk opgebouwd en je doet er goed aan om ze meerdere keren te luisteren om alle lagen te ontdekken. Het is wel een intens album, waar je zeker van moet houden wil je het echt waarderen, maar voor de liefhebber van het meer technische, extreme werk een absolute aanrader.

After having collaborated with producers such as Jens Bogren (At The Gates, Haken, The Ocean), Logan Mader (Gojira, Periphery, Once Human) and Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amaranthe, Epica), metanoia was mixed by David Castillo, who has worked with genre greats like Leprous, Soen and Opeth, and mastered by Tony Lindgren (Enslaved, Ihsahn, Sepultura).
"metanoia" sets off with the opulent opener “Katabasis”, drawing dramatic, cinematic soundscapes mixed with electronic influences. The soft, clear vocals of Marc Martins
alternate with sharp growls and pierce through constantly changing riffs. PERSEFONE balances soft passages with intense walls of sound on tracks like “Aware of Being Watched” – in which clean vocals and jazzy sections alternate with intense riffing carried by dense drumming – while solid, rich sound takes on orchestral dimensions on songs such as “Leap of Faith”. Vivid and dynamic instrumentation, tempo and rhythm make up the intense ride “Merkabah”, showcasing the band’s hardest yet most vulnerable sides as screams and blast beats are followed by soft instrumentation – spanning the song’s intensity to its maximum. A special surprise is the 11-minute masterpiece “Consciousness Pt. 3”, which continues a series of songs from the band’s fourth album Spiritual Migration (2013). The album closes with another opulent set of songs, “Anabasis Pt. 1”, “Anabasis Pt. 2” and “Anabasis Pt. 3”. “Anabasis Pt. 1” starts off with calm, dreamy piano sounds, drifting over to the intense “Anabasis Pt. 2” and leading seamlessly into “Anabasis Pt. 3”, gently closing the album with a cinematic outro."
