"We are not the rule, we are the exception!"
Terwijl je als recensent krampachtig zoekt naar een zoveelste 'originele' manier om een nieuwe release te omschrijven, geven de muzikanten er zelf eigenlijk geen fuck om. Het gaat immers om muziek, lieve mensen, dus neem die kunstvorm gewoon in je op, beleef ze, geniet ervan en sta er verder niet te veel bij stil.
Dus: het duo ODAM schreef een 'stuk' in opdracht van en exclusief voor het Roadburn Redux festival van april dit jaar in de 013 (Tilburg). Ze schreven niet enkel dit uiterst beklijvend werk, maar filmden de set ook nog eens. Dubbel genieten dus, want het beeldmateriaal is ronduit schitterend en een niet onbelangrijke aanvulling bij het geluid.
De openingstrack I am that is zuigt je als het ware mee in een andere wereld. Zware, donkere elektronische soundscapes, diepe beats en de bezwerende zang van Michelle geven het nummer een spirituele sfeer, op het sacrale af. Wat volgt is een pak luchtiger, al blijft die duistere ondertoon doorheen elke nummer als een rode draad aanwezig. Ik snap waarom hun muziek ook als '(dream)pop' wordt omschreven: de melodielijnen zijn nl. van een onaardse schoonheid en blijven goed in het gehoor liggen. In die context is er ook niets mis met een dergelijke stempel, zolang je maar begrijpt dat OBAM mijlenver van platte, commerciële (huppeldepup) pop blijft. Daarvoor is trouwens de thematiek (zie 'lees') net iets te 'dood'.

Laat ons hopen dat Olivier J.LW (gitaren, programmatie) en Michelle Nocon (zang, noisebox, tapeloops) dit mooie en diepgaande concept live mèt publiek kunnen brengen. Ik ben er alvast bij.

It is hard to guess that Of Blood and Mercury finds its roots in extreme music. Despite achievements with their other bands, worldwide touring and releasing albums, the couple felt limited within the genre. A will to explore alternative styles united the two souls into this project. In the spring of 2020, their debut album “Strangers” was released on Belgian label Consouling Sounds Records. The duo’s music is described as a mix of dream pop, dark ambient and ethereal wave. With fragile darkness, “Strangers” tells us about the memories they never had.
“The Other side of Death” is an exclusive commissioned piece written, performed and recorded at Roadburn Redux 2021. Using uncommon instruments and bizarre items, the couple came up with an unusual dark, ambient album that moves us through the first moments of after-life. Using distorted tapes from people who already crossed the other side, the duo delivers an otherworldly and moving performance. In order to preserve the authenticity of the commissioned work, “The Other Side of Death” stands as a statement; it will be self-released, strictly limited to 100 copies and not downloadable through digital means. The release date is set to eleven September 2021 and available through their bandcamp.
