"Niets nieuws onder de zon, maar wel goed gedaan en aangenaam om naar te luisteren." Dat was mijn verdict na een eerste kennismaking met deze band uit Duitsland. Nu ik het volledige nieuwe album meermaals heb kunnen beluisteren, wil ik die uitspraak toch iets krachtiger maken: zéér aangenaam om naar te luisteren en meteen één van de bands waar ik op Alcatraz-vrijdag naar uitkijk.
Landgenoten van Long Distance Calling, ook instrumentale muziek, ook post rock ... ik kan dus niet anders dan even vergelijken. Beide tappen uit hetzelfde genrevaatje, beide gaan héél sfeervol en melodieus tewerk. Waar LDC regelmatig Floydesque invloeden laat doorsijpelen, hoor je dit bij MSK véél minder. Dit viertal tapt meer uit het buitenaardse en ook licht Oosterse invloeden. Het verklaart ook een beetje de omschrijving 'hypnotic rock'.
Typisch voor het genre is dan weer de duur van de nummers, waarbij de helft ervan tegen de tien minuten aanleunt. Nergens gaat dit echter vervelen, nergens heb je het gevoel dat songs gerokken worden. Elk van de zes tracks bevat ruimschoots afwisseling, verschuivingen in dynamiek en sfeer. Het gaat regelmatig van voorzichtig ingezette intro's over kraakheldere passages tot epische uitbarstingen, waarbij de bitterzoete melodieën van een breekbare schoonheid getuigen. Stevige riffs gaan gepaard met indrukwekkende elektronische soundscapes. Een pulserende ritmesectie zorgt voor een betoverende onderstroom. Leadsingle Prema bv. laat dat brede spectrum aan sferen en emoties horen. Tijdens Mukti voel je de donkere momenten, wanhoop en droefheid waar de vier vrienden zich de afgelopen jaren hebben doorgesleurd.
Het resultaat, hun zesde album in een carrière die reeds twintig jaar beslaat, mag er zijn en moet gehoord worden. Op z'n minst een deftige luisterbeurt gunnen!

Formed almost 20 years ago as a strong bond of best friends with a steady line-up ever since, the band has amassed an incredibly successful back catalogue of five highly acclaimed records and a live album in 2017, as well as extensive touring performances at sold-out venues and prestigious festivals that have marked them as one of the most well-respected instrumental post- and hypnotic rock bands within the heavy music community.
Closing a seven-year gap since their latest studio album, Moksha, My Sleeping Karma will release their most emotional, deepest, darkest record to date, inspired by tragic events, on July 29, 2022.
The new album, Atma – the logical successor to Moksha – describes the (absolute) self, the indestructible, eternal essence of the spirit, and is often translated as the "soul". Sickness, death, and existential fear had brought the band to a point in music and life at which they were close to parting ways. But their will to survive has been recorded on Atma, a record the band wasn’t even sure would see the light of day when they started working on it back in 2017, and if it did, would’ve never been for industry sales, fame or success.
Atma tells the story of their lives, processing the trauma of the personal tragedies, deepest pain and fear of four best friends that have been going through their darkest days since their band existence.
As Dave Wyndorf once said, My Sleeping Karma is art – and their new, cathartic record not only captures the zeitgeist of the times, but leaves a little light for hope, love, beauty and strength amid all the ugly facets of our vulnerable lives.
