Soms zit er een hele mooie verrassing in je mailbox. Als een oester die je opent en waarin volledig onverwachts een echt pareltje vindt. Zo voelde het een beetje toen ik de mail met het album Music Inspired by Slavs opende.
De door traditionele music geïnspireerde band Music Inspired By, brengt met dit nieuwe album, geïnspireerd door de Slavische cultuur en geschiedenis, hun vierde album uit. Het album heeft een tracklist van maar liefst zestien nummers, maar meerdere daarvan zijn korte intro’s.
Music inspired by Slavs wordt omschreven als een atmosferisch album. Een album dat hoog op de tiplijst voor fans van Wardruna en Heilung zal staan, maar is dat echt zo?
Na het album meerdere keren geluisterd te hebben: Ja, het is atmosferisch, het klinkt zo lekker. Dit is een plaat die je opzet als achtergrondmuziek maar ook net zo goed opzet als je er eens lekker voor wilt gaan zitten. Maar zal hij het goed doen bij de traditionele nordic folk fans? Ik weet het niet zo.
Voor een deel wel, er staan een aantal nummers op die echt zeer dark folk, nordic folk aandoen. Het nummer Perun is er daar één van. Een fantastisch mooi nummer met een geweldige video die je zo naar de oude wereld brengt. Ook Rod voelt echt als een dark folk nummer.
Het nummer Swarog, daarentegen klinkt meer als een David Bowie-song. En Mokosz heeft twee volledige verschillende klanken…Ik ga lekker niet verraden waarom dit één van mijn favorieten is.
Andere nummers nemen je mee in het gevoel van Phil Collins, en weer andere in vrolijke fluit van de meer Keltische folk. Eigenlijk is er in elk nummer wel iets van “Oh, dit klinkt als of het in deze categorie thuishoort,” om dan met het volgende nummer weer volledig iets anders te horen.
Dus: dit album is echt niet alleen voor de Nordic folk fans, maar ook voor liefhebbers van Keltische folk, voor de instrumentale fan, voor de creatief-met-instrumenten-fan, voor de soft rock 80s fan, maar vooral, dit is een album voor een muziekliefhebber!
Oh, en de balfolkies, kunnen hier ook wel mee uit de voeten, denk ik.
Music inspired by Slavs, is een pareltje dat het luisteren meer dan waard is.

“Music Inspired by Slavs”, the new album, is a multidimensional album. Folk music blends here with rock and electronics. The spicy, folk, Slavic climate of the compositions is the musical “main dish”. However, it is not the only one. Against its background, you can hear instruments and languages from different parts of the world.
So, in musical terms, this is a multi-threaded and multicultural story, and “Slavdom” is its center. In the conceptual layer - the titles of individual tracks are the names of Slavic deities. There are also five short musical forms on the album that serve as interludes. Their titles (north, east, west, south, center) are a kind of road signs indicating the character of various, external musical influences present onthe album.
There are many guests on this album. A total of sixteen artists have complemented the basic, three-member MIB project lineup. Krzysztof Drabikowski (Batiuszka) took care of the unusual, atmospheric, dark vocals, reminiscent of church liturgical songs and folk singing. Mariusz Duda from Riverside (this time as Lunatic Soul) sang in the song “Swaróg”, creating an incredibly melodic and spacious atmosphere with his voice.
The mythology of the ancient Slavs served as the guiding theme. In addition to the purely musical content, album has a wonderful graphic design and contains descriptions of each song, introducing the listener to the world of ancient Slavic deities.
