The Doors revisited? Ik hoorde onlangs nog iemand zeggen "Dat zat er toch altijd in?". Mijn excuses dan, het is pas nu dat het me zo opvalt.
Graveyard staat erom gekend dat ze zichzelf zelden of nooit herhalen. Toch niet twee albums op rij. Toch blijft die herkenbare psychedelische, met blues doorspekte classic rock steeds aanwezig. Peace (2018) liet een hard rockende band horen, terwijl Innocence & Decadence (2015) een pak experimenteler was. Met 6 gaan ze voorzichtig terug richting het machtige Hissingen Blues (2011), maar dan een véél rustiger en gedrenkt in een melancholisch en donker sfeertje.
De toon wordt meteen gezet bij de albumopener Godnatt (goedenacht) dat héél dromerig klinkt. Alsof de mannen aan het afsluitstuk van dit album bezig zijn en je zachtjes in slaap willen wiegen. In diezelfde sfeer zitten Breathe In Breathe Out, Sad Song (net als No Way Out door Truls Mörck gezongen), Bright Lights en No Way Out. Dat zijn héél wat ingetogen nummers, waardoor dit album zich alweer eens onderscheidt van de rest van hun oeuvre. De rust in de songs staat echter zeker niet gelijk met saai of slaapverwekkend, integendeel, daarvoor wordt er véél te sterk gemusiceerd én gezongen, toch door Joakim Nilsson. Ik blijf het namelijk een minpunt vinden dat Mörck zoveel de mic toegewezen krijgt, al doet hij dat vooral op Sad Song best goed.
Tegenover al dat zoete staan natuurlijk ook songs waarop Graveyard met de nodige power uitpakt. Twice bv. dat de riff van Desire (U2) combineert met rauwe rock & roll zoals de Rolling Stones of Black Crowes die brachten. Of Just A Drop dat helemaal de psychedelische rock toer van The Doors opgaat, zonder die enerverende keys van Manzarek dan.
I Follow You en het slotstuk Rampant Fields - wat een episch nummer is me dat zeg! - hangen zo'n beetje tussen de rest in en bieden zo het beste van twee werelden.
Dit is meteen ook typisch voor 6: Graveyard laat op dit album misschien wel het beste uit hun repertoire horen en balanceert perfect tussen gas geven en gas terugnemen.

6 is easily identifiable as the most striking, original album of Graveyard's story so far. A gently lysergic blend of desolate guitars, simmering Hammond and lithe, nimble bass and drums, the Swedes demonstrate a lightness of touch that they have only hinted at in the past. To coincide with the albums release, the band have also revealed a visualiser for the track 'Bright Lights'.

The album was recorded at Silence Studios and Don Pierre Studios and was produced by Don Ahlsterberg, who previously worked with the band on Graveyard (2007), Hisingen Blues (2011) and Lights Out (2012).
As enduring and authentic as an old school leather jacket, Graveyard have long since mastered the art of rock’n’roll. Formed in 2006 in Gothenburg, Sweden, their shared passion for hard rock, psychedelia and the eternal bedrock of blues marked them out from the start. Led by vocalist/guitarist Joakim Nilsson, they opened their account with their now seminal self-titled Tee Pee Recordings debut in 2007, showcasing fiery chemistry and some wildly imaginative songwriting. Subsequently snapped up by the mighty Nuclear Blast Records, the band’s rise to prominence was swift and irresistible.
In 2008, guitarist Jonatan Ramm expanded the ranks, joining Nilsson, bassist Rikard Edlund and drummer Axel Sjöberg for the recording of second album Hisingen Blues. A critical smash that more than lived up to the hype, it established Graveyard as rock’n’roll heavyweights. A thunderous, soul-stirring live band, with subtlety and swagger in equal amounts, they spent the next decade keeping fans of loose-limbed and earthy rock music in a near-constant state of rapture. From the rootsy clatter of 2012’s Lights Out to the magical, muscular grooves of 2018’s Peace (taking in the sepia-tinted folk doom of 2015’s Innocence & Decadence along the way), Graveyard have made some of the most vital and vivid heavy rock of the 21st century.
