Van heksen en trollen, het in Bergen (NO) gesitueerde trio Drott dompelt ons onder in een mythische wereld, zowel muzikaal als tekstueel.
Niets te maken met labelgenoten Wardruna, en spreek al zeker niet over Heilung of je krijgt de toorn van de trollenmeesters bij Norse Music over je heen. Niet leuk als je weet dat trollen geen al te vriendelijke, héél erg grote en krachtige wezens zijn. 'Zijn', jawel, want ze bestaan écht nog hoor, daar ergens in de bosrijke bergen van Noorwegen (check maar Trolljegeren en/of Troll!). Trouwens, je zou voor minder je vriendelijkheid laten varen wanneer je doorlopend gejend wordt door dat gruwelijke klokkengeluid, toch?
Niets te maken ook met progressieve metal - je weet wel, dat genre van gefrustreerde jazz wannabees die zeventwintig nummers in één song willen proppen en krampachtig proberen aan te tonen dat ze méér uit hun instrumenten kunnen halen dan een gewone sterveling-muzikant - al staan er een aantal nummers op het album waarbij je redelijk wat variatie binnen de song kan vinden.
Troll is een beestje op zich dat je eigenlijke in twee kan splitsen. Enerzijds krijg je de beklemmende, donkere soundscapes die je als filmmuziek zou kunnen bestempelen. Doom meets jazz meets classical meets folk. Drums kruisen de degens met synths, cello's en gitaar. De vocale inbreng beperkt zich tot dreigend gegrom (Kristian Espedal) of meer klagende chants (Lindy Fay Hella). Ik denk dan aan opener Troldhaug dat naadloos overgaat in Allting, maar ook Solskodde, Mara en Natt.
Anderzijds zijn er ook de stukken die je meer als échte liedjes kan omschrijven. Våkenatt en Til Stein bv. die daadwerkelijk prog-invloeden laten horen. En de 'speciallekes' als Det Ser, Troll, Fornjots Born en Grotten die iets héél speels in zich hebben en laten horen dat we niet alles zo doodserieus moeten opvatten en een knipoog her en der wel op haar plaats is. Allez, dat hoop ik toch, anders zal mijn kijk op dit album niet erg geapprecieerd worden.
Hoe je Troll ook wil omschrijven - en dat zal écht wel op veel verschillende manieren kunnen - weet dat dit een erg boeiend album is waar ik alvast enorm veel luisterplezier aan beleef.

There is an ancient force. A neglected force. A force that has been linked to all that is inexplicable. It remains with the young and the old who tell each other tales of the unnatural. Some say this force comes from the North. Mountains and fjords are named after it. One word to encapsulate the mystery around us, a concept from old mythology that has been oppressed by the might of the church. Drott are guests as they stand on the threshold of this realm and explore the Scandinavian myths through experimental soundscapes.
Drott is comprised of Arve Isdal (Enslaved), Ivar Thormodsæter (Ulver) and Matias Monsen and hails from Bergen in the west coast of Norway. With their varied musical background ranging from metal and jazz to classical music, they create the genre which can only be described as Drott . Inspired by forces of nature, superstition and spirituality the trio explores light within darkness through their music.
The group, established (2020), released their self-titled EP in March 2021 to great reviews. It established Drott´s sound as a breath of fresh air in the genre. The first full-length album “ORCUS” was released in the fall of 2021. It is a description of a journey through the realm of Orcus, the lord of the Underworld. “Orcus” received great reviews describing the band as a unique mix of genres and sonic landscapes hard to label or categorize.
Their new release “TROLL” is a journey through superstition and legend. From the ancient father of the North, Fornjot, to the rituals of the witches, “TROLL” explores the hidden paths of old myths and trolldom. Layered in landscapes of contrasting guitars, ambient cellos and powerful drums, the album alludes to some of Drott ´s earlier soundscapes while revealing a new direction in their music.
