Er zijn zo van die momenten dat ik verdorie niet goed weet hoe beginnen. Met superlatieven? Met de mankementen? Met de benchmarks die gezet zijn? Met een stukje geschiedenis? Emoties? Damn you, Stapleton, ik weet het écht niet. Laat me alvast stellen dat Higher NIET hèt americana album van het jaar is en Stapleton zich NIET overtreft. De man is ondertussen echter uitgegroeid tot een icoon dat op elk album zo een hoog niveau haalt, dat het er allemaal niet toe doet. Ook alle awards die hij ondertussen op zijn naam heeft staan, meest recent nog die voor 'male vocalist' door de CMA.
Chris Stapleton, laat me even drie opvallende troeven vooruitschuiven: songwriting, zang, gitaarspel. Het ongelooflijk aantal (hit)songs dat de man ondertussen bijeen schreef, voor een groot stuk voor andere muzikanten in de countrywereld en daarbuiten (Adele, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Peter Frampton) leverde hem oneindig veel respect op. Die doorleefde, rauwe en van emoties doorspekte stem herken je uit de duizend. Dat de man een ferm stukske gitaar kan spelen zal ook niemand ontkennen.
De basis van zijn eigen songs kan je gerust in het vakje country plaatsen. De stem heeft bakken soul en die gitaar is gedrenkt in blues. Leuk dat hij zoveel country awards krijgt en hij steevast in dat genre geduwd wordt. Het doet zijn muziek echter véél te weinig eer aan. Luister maar goed naar de veertien nummers op zijn vijfde full album. De eerste single White Horse en South Dakota laten bij momenten sfeervolle tot stevige southern rock horen waarbij de man zijn stembanden schraapt en vuurwerk uit zijn six string tovert. Pure soul laat de man horen tijdens Think I'm In Love With you - met strijkers - en de ballads Loving You On My Mind en It Takes A Woman, gekenmerkt door respectievelijk een lekkere orgel en een duet met zijn vrouw Morgan). Zijn innerlijke Bruce Springsteen/Tom Petty laat hij los tijdens The Bottom, een aangenaam stukje heartland rock dus. Vocaal helemaal losgaat Stapleton tijdens de titelsong Higher: naar het einde van dit nummer hoor je pas echt wat een bereik en controle de man heeft. Om kippenvel van te krijgen. Het album sluit bloedmooi af met het rustige Mountains Of My Mind, dat ergens bengelt tussen country en folk. De enige keer dat hij alle clichés van country music in een nummer propt komt pas bij Weight Of Your World, waarop die verschrikkelijke pedal steel aan het janken gaat.
De rest van de nummers, waaronder het lekker voortkabbelende The Fire, behoren tot wat ik de betere kampvuurliedjes zou noemen. Stuk voor stuk knap gedaan, leuk om naar te luisteren maar het is nu ook niet dat ze eruit springen.
Een streepje kritiek? Naar inhoud (lyrics) toe is het allemaal wat gewoontjes, al valt dit binnen de verwachtingen. Stapleton is niet de man van grote en diepgaande boodschappen en ook daar is niets mis mee.
Net als op Starting Over laat Chris Stapleton hier zowat het volledige spectrum dat binnen americana valt, horen. Iets minder de nadruk op folk en blues, al zit dat laatste verweven in de ruimte en emotie die hij uit zijn gitaar tovert. Een album dat elke country/americana liefhebber in huis moet halen.

Higher is the fifth studio album by American musician Chris Stapleton, released through Mercury Nashville on November 10, 2023. The album was produced by Dave Cobb, Stapleton and his wife Morgane. It was preceded by the lead single "White Horse".
The album was recorded at RCA Studio A in Nashville, Tennessee, and additionally features producer Dave Cobb on acoustic and electric guitar and Stapleton's wife Morgane on backing vocals, synthesizer and tambourine, along with contributions from members of his touring band J.T. Cure and Derek Mixon, as well as Paul Franklin, and Lee Pardini. A press release stated that the album "span[s] genres and def[ies] easy categorization", while Uproxx described the album and lead single "White Horse" as "emotionally raw and brutally honest".
Higher received a score of 75 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on five critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception. Exclaim!'s Dylan Barnabe wrote that while the album "may not muster the same anthemic thunder of singles like 'Might as Well Get Stoned' (though 'White Horse' comes close), [...] it illustrates Stapleton's range and willingness to colour outside the lines", finding that "he's a little bit older and a little bit wiser, but Stapleton is still the same storyteller and he's still got things to say". Alyssa Goldberg of Paste stated, "musically, Higher maintains the same high-caliber energy as Stapleton's previous work [...] However, lyrically Higher is more reserved" than his past work, concluding that "despite [the album's] lyrical shortcomings, Chris Stapleton still reigns high in the country genre and has delivered another admirable album".
Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic felt that "the heart of Higher resides in stark, intimate ballads and, especially, simmering soul numbers that rely as much on a supple groove as it does on Stapleton's gruff testifying". Lorie Liebig of American Songwriter wrote that "although his sound is more varied than ever, the collection of songs feels cohesive. He's never been an artist too confined by genre lines, but Higher lets Stapleton roam free creatively". John Amen of No Depression wrote, "Stapleton is at once adventurous and a proponent of the tried and true. With Higher, he navigates an array of intriguing sonics. As with previous outings, though, it’s his voice — equal parts straight bourbon, aloe balm, Marlboro smoke, and Tupelo honey — that stands out and carries the day. You might call it irresistible, signature, even as it conjures the ghosts of country music’s great progenitors."
Slant Magazine's Thomas Bedenbaugh found "White Horse" to be "the best of the album's uptempo cuts, and largely due to its relative lyrical subtlety" as "most of the other songs on Higher are lyrically vague and repetitive in their fixation on the trials of broken, lonely men and the women in their lives"
