Waarom hou ik zo van die '70s sound met invloeden uit soul, blues, rock, psychedelica en zoveel meer? No clue, maar die roffelende drums (slaat die man op potten, kartonnen dozen en plastiek emmers?), die soms fuzzy gitaren, die stuwende bas en die bij momenten schreeuwerige vocalen met soulvolle backings erachter....jawel, het raakt me. Destijds had je een 8-track om alles op te nemen, tegenwoordig doen ze het erop lijken, maar het maakt dat specifieke geluid compleet. Ben ik dan blijven steken in die tijd en vind ik dat er tegenwoordig geen goede muziek meer wordt gemaakt (dixit véél van mijn generatiegenoten)? Absoluut niet! Luister maar eens naar dit schijfje van het Zweedse Blues Pills. Het is alsof je een dwarsdoorsnede krijgt van het beste wat de jaren '70 hebben voortgebracht. En daar reken ik een Janis Joplin én een zekere Jimi Hendrix bij. Het psychedelische California en het bluesy Dust bv. hadden zo uit de pen van bovengenoemde grootheden kunnen vloeien. Het funky Kiss My Past Goodbye doet me dan weer denken aan onze eigen Black Mirrors, die regelmatig uit hetzelfde rijke vaatje tappen. Wish I'd Known is dan weer schatplichtig aan diverse soulqueens en zet een rustig einde van het album in. Het epische, wat 'southern rock' - zij het met bakken soul en psychedelische invloeden - aandoend Song From A Mourning Dove is een zoveelste hoogtepunt. Eentje om aan je collectie toe te voegen!

After topping the charts in several countries and even hitting the #1 position in Germany with their previous studio effort "Lady In Gold", the band decided to work with renowned Grammy Award winning Andrew Scheps and Nicolaus Arson (The Hives) to prove that they are here to stay as leaders of a new generation of vintage rock.
”This album is something we’ll be proud of even after death", the band reflects. "These songs are from a very dark period of our lives. So much loss, anger and anxiety. Sadness and change. A separation into reincarnation. We stand behind every note and every word. This album was created in darkness and it guided us into the light again. One can only hope it will give you comfort too.”
"Holy Moly!" was written, produced and recorded in BLUES PILLS' own analogue studio which they built in the beautiful countryside of Närke, Sweden. In the old factory building, where the studio is located Zack, Elin and André spent almost a year recording and writing songs.
The album is recorded by BLUES PILLS guitarist Zack, although with some helping hands along the way from THE HIVES members Nicolaus Arson and Johan Gustafsson, as well as Martin Jacobsson from Rovljud Sound. "Holy Moly!" is self- produced by BLUES PILLS and mixed by the Grammy award winning Andrew Scheps (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, IGGY POP, ADELE, BLACK SABBATH, RIVAL SONS, HOZIER). The album illustration ”Beast” is by the artist Daria Hlazatova.
