Beyond the black, there's a bright and colorful world of fairies, elves and unicorns. Want geef nu toe, er is helemaal niets 'zwart/donker' aan dit Duitse vijftal. Hun symfonische metal is het muzikale equivalent van Disney: de eerste beide albums waren nog 'Maleficent', nummer drie was nog 'Frozen' en nu is het 'Beauty and the Beast'. Alle nummers zijn héél erg braafjes, zitten bomvol clichés en lijken wel uit een 'formulefabriek' voor radiovriendelijke hits te komen. De gitaren verzuipen veelal in een vette synth saus, de drums lijken soms uit een - zij het erg gesofistikeerde - drumcomputer te komen, al zijn het net de drums die bepaalde nummers toch dat ietsje meer power/metal geven.
Is dit dan een 'slechte' plaat? Belange niet. De 'machine' achter en rondom de uiterst bevallige en vocaal zéér sterke Jennifer Haben heeft met Hørizøns een album van hoog 'pop' niveau gemaakt. Bijna geen enkel nummer moet onderdoen voor een ander, op die éne uitzondering na: Marching On wordt dan ook gezongen door Chris Hermsdörfer (b) en die heeft geen stem om leads op zich te nemen. Hij kan bovendien zijn afkomst niet verbergen want voor het eerst horen we klanken als 'woois' i.p.v. 'voice' en daar krimpen enkele lichaamsdelen toch van ineen. Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) naast Haben plaatsen in Wounded Healer is dan een betere keuze: beide hebben wel een cleane stem, maar verschillen van timbre en vullen elkaar mooi aan. Haben is ook uiterst sterk in ballades, al is I Won't Surrender niet één van haar beste nummers en worden de meubelen deels gered door de cello van Tina Guo. Hadden ze hier maar alle ballast overboord gegooid en het gehouden op stem/piano/cello.
Laat ons eerlijk zijn, Beyond The Black is niet echt een band(zie de cover van het album) , maar een vehikel rond de persoon en het talent van Jennifer Haben, het voormalige Kika prinsesje dat eigenlijk een popster moest worden...en dat uiteindelijk via een omweg ook zal worden. Ter afsluit een vergelijk, omdat ik het niet laten kan: Haben zou voor de 'metal' kunnen zijn wat Shania Twain was voor de 'country'.
