Guess who's back... One better! Meteen al bij opener Master Of The Universe krijg je het hele Angus McSix verhaal te horen. Zeg maar dag tegen die hamer en groene outfit, vanaf nu zie je Thomas shinen in goud met zijn onverwoestbare zwaard; Sixcalibur. Welke dan ook weer een uitgebreide inleiding krijgt in het tweede nummer.
Laser-Shooting Dinosaur is next en volgens mij is deze toch wel m'n favoriet! De tekst is volledig over the top en hilarisch, maar dat moet ook gewoon kunnen. Toffe, luchtige powermetal, ondersteund door straffe riffs, een elektronische "breakdown" en een heel hoog dansgehalte. Awel, daar maakte mij nu eens gelukkig mee se! Het zou ook perfect een Ninja Sex Party nummer kunnen zijn, maar dan in een powerjasje. Ride To Hell is nog een van mijn favorieten. Deze is dan weer een vreemde mashup tussen Electric Callboy en powermetal. Als je het nummer gehoord hebt ga je volledig begrijpen wat ik bedoel. Eigenlijk is dit hele album een soort combinatie tussen NSP, EC en powermetal, and I'm all for it!
Als ik eerlijk ben kan ik over elk nummer een hele paragraaf schrijven en blijven vertellen wat hen zo goed maakt. Alleen vrees ik dat ik jou als lezer dan ongelooflijk ga vervelen en dat deze review dan veel te lang gaat worden. Neem het dus maar van mij aan; elke track heeft heel sterke aspecten, al zijn het de geweldig hoge vocals of supersonisch snelle riffs, de elektronische elementen of bangelijke solo's, een hoog meezing-gehalte of momenten waarop je spontaan wil beginnen dansen... Het is te veel om op te noemen. Enige wat wel een beetje bizar is, is het feit dat er een intro middenin het album staat. Je zou denken dat die dan wordt opgevolgd door een extra lang nummer ofzo, maar dat is ook niet het geval.
Oké, oké, toch nog een nummer waar ik het even over wil hebben: The Key To Eternity. Het ritme in dat refrein is superleuk. Het is vrij simpel, maar dit maakt het echt onmogelijk om niet mee te zingen. Ik wil ook gewoon elke keer in mijne living staan springen wanneer die begint te spelen. Samen met de twee boven vermelde tracks, maakt deze mijn top drie van Angus McSix and the Sword of Power compleet.
Het album begint dan wel als een overduidelijke (en hilarische) steek naar Gloryhammer, maar eerlijk is eerlijk... Dit is echt wel een sterk staaltje powermetal. Buiten die typische powersound en geweldige vocalrange van Thomas, krijg je hier ook nieuwe, elektronische elementen. Dit is best wel gedurfd, maar het werkt en zorgt voor een frisse wind in het genre. Als je weet wie de bandleden zijn en bij welke bands ze allemaal al gespeeld hebben, dan had je net zoals ik ook niet anders verwacht dan dat het goed ging klinken. Maar eerlijk... Ze hebben mijn verwachtingen zelfs nog weten te overtreffen. Je kan ook duidelijke invloeden van deze andere bands terughoren op het album, er zijn namelijk meerdere solo's en riffs met een heel hoog Orden Ogan-gehalte!
Met Angus McSix and the Sword of Power ben ik helemaal verliefd geworden op deze band. Ik kijk dan ook al enorm hard uit naar de dag dat ik hen live aan het werk kan zien. De sfeer, de energie, veel te veel klappen en springen,... ik kan het me zo inbeelden. Angus McSix moet dan alleen nog even een Europese tour op poten zetten!

While riding on the back of a Pegasus, head-bopping techno beats and synth-waves are abound on “Ride to Hell“. Catchy guitar solos underline the sword’s powerful capability of gaining higher levels each time an enemy is killed by its blade. “Master of the Universe" continues the epic adventure and marks the comeback of ANGUS McSIX as he returns from the abyss. Euphoric and energetic melodies mingle with his legendary powerful vocals. The portal does lead Angus back to Scotland, but directly to the dawn of time. After the glorious warrior defeats an invasion of hellish “Fireflies of Doom”, the dwellers of the Holy Dwarven Empire of Dundee provide him the "LaserShooting Dinosaur", set to music in the energetic and catchy party track, reminiscent of the good old 8-bit video game days. As the last hope for this world, Angus is now to ride to the northern islands of Stenness to discover the secret of his own destiny…
