Power, power en nog eens power. Had ik al vermeld dat het nieuwe album van Amaranthe vol power zit? Wel, ja dus! Het zijn stuk voor stuk geweldige nummers die je kan terugvinden op Manifest. Fans van de band zullen dan ook absoluut niet teleurgesteld zijn. Niet alleen is dit de typische elektronische en stevige stijl van Amaranthe, het is diezelfde stijl op een manier die nóg beter is dan wat we tot nu toe gehoord hebben. Het is duidelijk dat Nils zijn plaats en sound heeft gevonden in de band en hierdoor de muziek naar een hoger niveau tilt.
Manifest begint dan ook geweldig met Fearless en je voelt meteen dat het er net wat steviger aan toe gaat dan op de vorige albums. Alle nummers zijn echt stuk voor stuk top, maar er zijn er wel enkelen die meer blijven hangen en er boven uit springen. Eentje hiervan is Archangel. Hét nummer waarvan ik in het begin nog dacht; "ehh... die is iets minder voor mij". En dit puur voor de "vreemde" whoawhoa's die Elise zingt tijdens het refrein. Toen ik de videoclip voor het eerst bekeek, leken die daar totaal niet op hun plaats voor mij. Nu krijg ik het nummer echter niet meer uit mijn hoofd. En die whoa's? Wel, laten we zeggen, they grew on me. Een softer nummer dat wat langer bleef hangen bij mij, is Crystalline. Een heel mooie en rustige track, die even een adempauze geeft in deze power-madness.
En ja, als kers op de taart, dé echte uitspringen; BOOM!. Wanneer je dit nummer hoort, zal je het sowieso wel begrijpen. BOOM! is een nummer waarin Henrik de lead krijgt en dit geeft het meteen een hele andere vibe. Het is ook wel een beetje een grappig nummer, zeker wanneer Elize op een gegeven moment zegt: 'Ey, let me try that" en er dan zelf een "BOOM" uit-screamt. Later vraagt ze dan ook nog eens (met een echte Britney stem) "That's so cool GG, what else goes boom?", waarop Henrik al screamend antwoord: "THE BREAKDOWN GOES BOOM!". Hilarisch en geweldig tegelijk. Ik hoop dan ook oprecht dat ze hier nog een musicvideo van gaan uitbrengen.
Manifest eindigt even krachtig als het begon, maar dan met Do Or Die. Een nummer dat hint naar de klimaatsveranderingen en het milieu. Iets wat ik zelf alleen maar kan appreciëren. Dus Amaranthe fans, koop dit album (of luister er gewoon naar) en speel hem plat, want dat is hij echt wel waard!

Music has become more important than ever in recent times. As a result, the triumphant return of Amaranthe feels particularly timely. The Swedish six-piece have spent the last decade establishing themselves as a formidable, positive and fervently melodic force for metallic good. From their explosive self-titled debut in 2011 to the more sophisticated, streamlined likes of 2014’s Massive Addictive and its immaculate follow-up Maximalism (2016), Amaranthe have masterfully blurred the lines between melodic metal, crushing brutality, cinematic sweep and futuristic sparkle. Led by the endlessly ingenious songwriting of guitarist Olof Mörck and powerhouse vocalist Elize Ryd, their rise to prominence has been a joy to behold.
Widely acclaimed as a dazzling live act, the Swedes reached a new peak of creativity on 2018’s hugely successful Helix: an album that pushed the band’s vision to new heights, breadths and depths, while showcasing the brilliance of Elize and her co-vocalists, Henrik Englund Wilhelmsson and recent recruit Nils Molin. As they approached the making of their sixth full-length album, Olof notes that Amaranthe had never been more united or fired-up for the future.
“It’s definitely the most mature and philosophical album we’ve made. It’s deep and there’s a wide array of lyrical topics on there. We brought it up a little on the Do Or Die single, which as a little bit about the current environmental changes and the climate situation. We also have a few lyrical comments and discourses about the coronavirus situation as well, even if they’re not entirely on-the-nose. Then we have a break up song – not just a song about a relationship, but also about friendships and business things too.”
Not just a glorious return but a wholesale upgrade for their exuberant sound, Manifest is simply the most daring, dynamic and unforgettable album that Amaranthe have released to date. The perfect antidote to the nagging anxieties plaguing us all in these troubled times, it’s a Technicolor celebration of metal’s ageless power, blazing with all of life’s colours and chaos, but delivered with utmost artistry and skill.
