Weg met het 'elektronica' experimentje op Walk The Sky (2019), toch veruit het minste van de zes voorgaande albums. Alter Bridge laat opnieuw de gitaren voluit knallen en dat vertaalt zich in bij momenten superzware riffs en knap solowerk. Jaja, meneer Tremonti kan het nog steeds. Het kan ook geen kwaad dat hij in Scott Phillips (d) en Brian Marshall (b) een héél straffe en veelzijdige ritmesectie heeft én - laat ons deze meneer vooral niet vergeten - een wereldzanger en songwriter in Myles Kennedy. En toch bengelt Pawns & Kings wat mij betreft toch redelijk onderaan het lijstje. Really? Waarom dan? Wel, zo stilaan zijn de gebruikte 'formules' gekend en is er zo goed als niets dat nog verrast, geen frisse wind ook. Allemaal op torenhoog niveau hé, de competitie ver achter zich latend, dat wel.
De eerste drie songs, met Silver Tongue als lichte uitschieter, laten de band horen zoals we ze maar al te goed kennen: powerriffs, epische refreinen, een grootse arenasound en vocaal meesterlijk gezongen. In contrast staat dan Stay, een radiovriendelijke rocker die wel lekker in het oor ligt, maar verder weinig kan bekoren. Fable of the Silent Son doet mijn oren spitsen: de door folk beïnvloede intro doet wat aan Led Zeppelin denken en dan ben ik natuurlijk benieuwd wat ze verder met dit nummer gaan doen. Weinig moet ik toegeven, de song krijgt wel wat tempowissels en leunt soms bij prog aan, maar het aloude recept sluipt snel binnen zodat ik mijn aandacht er geen volle acht minuten bij kan houden. Last Man Standing lijkt dan een andere richting uit te gaan, opnieuw prog, maar zodra het refrein eraan komt, gaat alles terug de 'epische' toer op. De rest van de tracks volgen braafjes het uitgestippelde pad.
Plaats Pawns & Kings gerust achter hun eerste vier releases (de volgorde kies je maar zelf), wat alvast beter is dan de voorgaande twee worpen waar ik hen zowat helemaal kwijt mee raakte. Ik ben dus een pak minder enthousiast dan de collega's bij Rock Tribune en Classic Rock. Maakt niet uit: de bestaande fans zullen ervan snoepen, nieuwe krijgen ze er echter niet bij.
