Ad Infinitum heeft hier weer een krachtig staaltje symfonische metal gecreëerd. Met Chapter III - Downfall brengen ze ons een fijne afwisseling tussen duistere en zachtere nummers met telkens die typische sound van de band. Meteen al bij Eternal Rains word je volledig meegezogen in het album. Het refrein van deze track heeft trouwens de afgelopen dagen te pas en te onpas in mijn hoofd gezeten. De vier volgende nummers werden eerder gereleaset als singles, dus deze kende ik al wat beter. Neemt niet weg dat ik er elke keer weer naar uitkeek om ze opnieuw te kunnen beluisteren. Vooral Upside Down, deze moet toch wel mijn favoriet zijn.
From The Ashes en Somewhere Better weten dan met hun epische symfonieën en poëtische teksten eerder een emotionele snaar te raken. Buiten de afwisseling tussen rustigere en hevigere nummers, krijgen we uiteraard ook nog de afwisseling tussen die prachtige, clean powerstem en zware grunts van Melissa Bonny. Dit weet hun muziek, voor mij persoonlijk, naar een nog hoger niveau te tillen.
Verdere verrassingen en nummers die meteen mijn aandacht trokken zijn; Ravenous (met die panfluit en epische intro) en het heel erg ingetogen Under The Burning Skies met zijn prachtige refrein. Met het legendarische Legends komt Chapter III dan ten einde. Bij de intro van deze afsluiter kan je nog even de stem van Chrigel Glanzmann (Eluveitie) herkennen.
Ik moet je zeggen, ik volg deze band nu al een tijdje en hoewel alle drie de hoofdstukken van deze albumreeks geweldig goed zijn, vind ik persoonlijk deze nieuwste toch echt wel het beste. Je kan een duidelijke progressie opmerken in de sound, maar ook in de grunts van Melissa. Er is meer variatie, het klinkt allemaal wat groter en voller en komt harder binnen. Ondanks dat dit album geen enkel nummer bevat dat Animals kan overtreffen voor mij, is in het geheel wel echt een geweldige evolutie te merken. En laten we eerlijk zijn... Upside Down komt toch echt wel heel dicht in de buurt van die track!
