In het Noorse Bergen woont Jarle Skavhellen en moest je niet beter weten zou je denken dat het de nieuwe James Taylor is met een vleugje John Denver. Een vrolijke singer-songwritersound en gitaarsounds om bij weg te dromen. Het album kwam tot stand na een roadtrip door het overweldigende landschap van IJsland. Na zijn full-length debuut, The Ghost In Your Smile van 2018 is het nu tijd om te genieten van het album Beech Street. Weetje, vier van deze songs werden ook uitgebracht als EP Northern Lights.
Drive zet meteen de toon van wat we mogen verwachten van dit album. Ingetogen teksten met prachtige zeemzoete gitaargeluiden. Tijdloos doch hedendaags voelt deze song aan, net zoals de meerderheid van de nummers.
In Winnebage nestelt een fluitend refrein zich in je geheugen, om daarna rustig onze roadtrip verder te zetten.
100% emotie in het nummer Just Not Ready to Let Go. Breekbare zang, prachtig begeleid door subtiel gitaarwerk.
Met Beech Street krijgen we een zeer kort instrumentaal nummer te horen. Ergens verwonderlijk aangezien dit toch de titeltrack is van het album.
We krijgen wat extra punch wanneer Crash & Burn door de luidsprekers schalt. Deze song valt duidelijk op in dit album door het hogere tempo.
Eén van mijn favorieten op het album is zeker Northern Lights, tijdens het beluisteren zie ik zo het Noorderlicht voor me, bewegend op deze tonen. Sober en sterk.
20 Fathoms Deep heeft een zeer catchy deuntje, je voelt je langzaam maar zeker dieper wegglijden in het diepe water.
Een tijdloze singer-songwriter die toch hedendaags aanvoelt. Ook al valt de vergelijking met Taylor en Denver, toch weet Jarle zijn eigenheid te bewaren.

lees An avowed fan of Gregory Alan Isakov’s Evening Machines, Jarle sought out producer Tucker Martine [My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, Neko Case, Sufjan Stevens, R.E.M.] who obliged to take the reins behind the board. Jarle travelled to the producer’s Portland, OR studio where he recorded for two weeks. “We really made the most of a short period of time,” smiles Jarle. “It was my first time in Portland, and Tucker was incredible to work with. He had a clear vision of which direction to take the songs in. The plan was to do a stripped-down mostly acoustic album. When we started playing, it became a separate thing. It was a creative environment. If one of us had an idea, we just went with it. We never stopped each other.”
Recording in the United States allowed him to organically explore his longstanding influence of Americana music. “The Americana vibe was never really a conscious choice,” he admits. “It just happened. I listen to a lot of folk. That usually bleeds into Americana at some point. I’m a big fan of J.J. Cale and Ry Cooder, some of those influences snuck into this record as well as simply being in the States.”
Jarle got his start in his hometown of Bergen, Norway. Following a string of singles and success on the Spotify Global Viral Chart, he engaged fans worldwide with his 2018 full-length debut, The Ghost In Your Smile. The record garnered praise from Clash, The 405, Thank Folk For That, and more. In addition to headlining shows across Europe, he has toured alongside Villagers and Ciaran Lavery, to name a few. The new record follows his 2020 EP, Northern Lights.
